LES CINEMAXX D’OR V OSCARS 2019 (ARTICLE IN FRENCH AND IN ENGLISH)

[EN] : The 91th Oscars Ceremony took place on Sunday evening and came with its lot of surprises (or not).
This article isn’t meant to tell of a nominee deserved his Oscar more than another just by yelling on the internet and the social media (I was apart of them, such a paradox). But it is meant to deliver in a really simple manner, my personal list of winners in this first opus of the Golden Cinemaxx.

Of course, I based this article on the existing list of nominees, the 2019 edition’s one and I have chosen my winners within this one.
Just a small detail, I took off the list the movies I couldn’t watched – maybe I didn’t had enough time or I just didn’t wanted to (For example: The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and Bohemian Rhapsody) or no movie theatres were offering to see a certain film (If Beale Street Could Talk).

Qui sera récompensé, qui aura la loose ? Réponse !

GREEN BOOK

[EN] : Engaged, poétic, tender and funny in many ways, Green Book is a true little masterpiece, a fresh-air puff in the actual cinematographic landscape. It confronts us to a well-known reality (there’s a plethora of movies depicting the horrors the Black people endured).
However, Peter Farelly’s film is transcended by a chopped-writing where the pathos is excluded and by the very talented acting of the two protagonists : Maharshela Ali and Viggo Mortensen.
Green Book is the story of a growing friendship between two men opposed by everything. A very effective and true road-movie in the way it delivers its message.

Finally, Mahasherla Ali is impeccable and touching in the role of a Black Pianist, a very elegant and refined protagonist that will slowly be taken by the brutal simplicity of Viggo Mortensen’s character. A real wonder!

VICE

[EN] : Funny and terrifying at the same time, Vice is a schizophrenic movie where the laugh often takes upon the violent drama, and in certain sequences the drama takes upon the laugh.
Vice is somewhat bipolar, it’s like a thesis and an antithesis, all or nothing, alpha and omega. It’s a counterintuitive movie which highlights the terrifying ascension of Dick Cheney, a worker who became one of the most powerful politician in the world and worked in the shadows to execute his own ideas despite all sense of morality.
Vice is surprising and quirky but also sinister, chilling and disturbing. Moreover, the production and the editing are binding together in an efficient and clever way to offer this original show which leaves us at the end of the movie with the same feeling as a mole coming out of its hole : My God, what did I just witnessed ?!

Incredible story indeed, without any false pretenses where Adam McKay gets the point in taking nothing seriously even if it means risking to upset the public by delivering an improbable one-man-show in the politic-scene, the whole sublimated by Christian Bale’s unrecognizable interpretation.

[EN] : Despite the presence of sumptuous actresses such as Rachel Weitz, Olivia Colman and the beautiful Emma Stone, The Favorite is before anything else an exceptional Baroque set and some classical costumes whose beauty is infinite. A real goldsmith’s work with a real sense of the details we can just appreciate.
But The Favorite, it’s also a sumptuous photography and the work on the chiaroscuro (or almost absence of light) that shows the feeling of insecurity and animosity Sarah and Abigail feel for each other. A photography with infernal lights to show that the two rivals are never free of their choices, despite their will to control everything. They are trapped in their own darkness, their own demons and their own fears. Trapped in a light of hope, the light of their own motivation.

The Favorite, an intense close quarters movie where two favorites are fighting each other while being trapped from themselves and thus are depending on a monarchial figure but also on their own ambitions.

FIRST MAN

Magistral !

[EN] : Even if I wasn’t really fond of Damien Chazelle’s movie, I must admit it has a quality : the sound in the production.
The sound has indeed this intimate and immersive feel, whereas the mixing of the loud and aggressive sound-mixing takes us immediately at the core of the rocket during the take-off just like we were the protagonists.
The process was identical when Neil and his crew were contemplating the outer space, the public had to face this abyssal silence too. Splendid !

Meilleure Chanson Originale/Best Original Song

« All the Stars » (Black Panther, composée par Kendrick Lamar, Al Shux, Sounwave, SZA et Anthony Tiffith). Interprété par Kendrick Lamar et SZA. « The Place Where Lost Things Go » (Le Retour de Mary Poppins, composé par Marc Shaiman et Scott Wittman). Interprétée par Emily Blunt.
« Shallow » (A Star Is Born, composée par Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando et Andrew Wyatt). Interprétée par Bradley Cooper et Lady Gaga.

A STAR IS BORN

[EN] : Here. Take your Oscar and your Golden Cinemaxx but please, I’m begging you, stop diffusing this song which is losing all its beauty and its magic after each passage on the radio.
Shallow is everywhere, on every radio, on every supports, many times a day, and that ends up leaving no more feeling at all, terminating every last bit of sympathy we could have for this beautiful song.

Meilleurs Effets Visuels/Best Visual Effects

Avengers: Infinity War
First Man

AVENGERS : INFINITY WAR

[EN] : Despite a bad integrated Bruce Banner in his Hulkbuster and a few minor mistakes here and there, Avengers : Infinity War is nonetheless a spectacular show. Thrilling and impressive on many aspects, starting with the composition in motion-picture and Thanos’ depiction.
It represented a humongous work done by Kevin Feige’s team which are always pushing further the limits of what’s possible.
